Although Sri Lanka’s President Gotabhaya Rajpakshe had Emailed his resignation letter to the Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardnae this evening through the Sri Lankan Embassy in Singapore, Speaker is scheduled to be announced the resignation of the ex president tomorrow (July 15) after verifying the legal validity of the letter the Speaker’s office had announced .
According to the Speaker’s Office in Colombo the hard copy of the letter received by Speaker from the President is scheduled to be brought back to Sri Lanka before making any official confirmation of his resignation.
President Rajapakshe who had fled the country in the wee hours of last Morning (July 13) along with his wife Ayoma Rajapakshe and two security officers had arrived in Maldives last Morning, from an Air force Jet flying from Katunayake International Airport. Amidst protest campaigns launched by Sri Lankans in Maldives capital he had stayed at a Star hotel in Male until this noon according to reports.
However due to the opposition of local and Sri Lankan community in Male as well as of Opposition parties in Maldives he left for Singapore through a Saudi Air flight and touched down at the Changi International Airport in Singapore around 5 pm Sri Lankan time, according to the foreign Media .
Earlier President had promised that he will step down from Executive Presidency on Wednesday (July 13) but as he fled the country in wee hours of yesterday he had continuously delayed sending the resignation letter to the Speaker. His delay of sending the letter may be due to the uncertainty risen regarding finding a place for him to reside critics believed.
President Rajapakshe had fled the country after the protesters of GO Gota home village in Galle Face green in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo along with tens of thousands of people arrived in Colombo from various parts of the country had captured his official residence in Galle face on 09th of July.
