Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena had officially announced the resignation of President Gotabhaya Rajapakshe who is currently in Singapore, this morning (July 15).

Briefing  the media this morning regarding the resignation of former President, Speaker has told that Gotabhya Rajapakshe who was the eighth executive President Of Sri Lanka had officially resigned with effect from 14th of July 2022, and the resignation letter he had sent through the Sri Lankan embassy in Singapore last night is legally valid under the clause 38 (1) of the Constitution in Sri Lanka the executive president can resign before end of his term through a letter send to the speaker.

Former President became the first executive president in Sri Lanka who had resigned before the end of his full term of five years. He was elected as president in 2019.

The new President is due to be selected through a Parliament vote on 20th of July and Prime Minister Ranil Wikramaisnghe is currently appointed as the acting President until the appointing of a new president. He is due to sworn in as the acting president today.
