The Former Sri Lankan President Gotabhaya Rajapakshe who had fled away from the country as a result of the popular public uprising on 09th of July had returned to the country last night (Sep 02) according to the Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport authorities.
Former President Rajapaskhe had arrived in Sri Lanka in a Singapore Airlines flight from Thailand where he had stayed around two weeks. He had fled away from the country to Maldives in mid July and after staying there for a few weeks he had flown to Singapore and thereafter to Thailand.
Several government ministers were present at the Airport last night to welcome the former president and heavy security had been deployed in and around the Katunayake Airport since yesterday it has been reported. He is expected to reside in a state bungalow at Nugegoda in Colombo district until the approval of his Green card in USA authorities have revealed. Although the former President had resigned from President’s post before serving his full term he will be given all the privileges entitled to the President’s post and will be allocated and additional security government sources have stated.
The Galle face protesters who were behind the popular July 09th uprising had demanded his resignation as a result of his mismanagement of Country affairs.
