Sri Lankan Police Arrested 84, Fired Tear Gas To Disperse Protesters

Riot police have fired tear gas and water cannon to disperse a massive protest march organized by the Socialist Youth wing at Deans Road in Maradana (Colombo-10) last evening (September 24) and arrested 84 protesters including the chief organizer of the protest.

The Protest March had begun from Town hall, Colombo and it was dispersed whilst on the way to Colombo Fort area it has been reported. The March was organized against issuing an Extraordinary Gazette Notification to declare several areas in Colombo as high security zones and against the rising cost of living.

The Riot Police had arrested 84 protesters including 78 men, 04 women and 02 Buddhist monks and 07 protesters were injured and hospitalized after clashing with the Police.
