Haryana Government is solely responsible for the violence that left nearly 30 people killed and over 200 injured after Dera chief Ram Rahim Singh was held guilty in rape case.
Had it been a Congress or AAP government in Haryana, the Centre would have dismissed the State apparatus for breakdown of law and order following the spiral of violence that left nearly 30 people killed and over 250 injured in Haryana and Punjab after Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was held guilty in rape case.
On Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said that India will no longer tolerate a chalta hai attitude. If he dares to walk the talk, he should dismiss the Manohar Lak Khattar government in Haryana for utterly failing act on time and doing its duty.
It needed no intelligence input or report to caution the Haryana Government of the violence that would follow the verdict in the Ram Rahim case. All it needed was an ounce of common sense. The government in Haryana did not have even that.
The Haryana High Court has done the right thing in asking the government to recover every penny for the loss of life and property from the Dera Sacha Sauda. The court should have gone one step further in asking the Haryana government to disband the sect.
The court ordered that “in case people indulge in causing loss to the properties, the process will be videographed and total loss will be recovered from the dera.”
The court also directed that no political, social or religious leader will issue any provocative statement and that FIR would be registered in case it was done by anyone.
But the irrepressible BJP MP Sakshi Maharaj waded into a controversy by saying that one person alleged rape but the world is not ready to listen to the feelings and sentiments of crores who are standing behind their guru.
Brutal mob violence was unleashed by Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s followers after he was convicted by a special CBI court in Panchkula in a 15-year old rape case on Friday.

While nearly 30 people were killed and over 250 are injured, the agitated supporters also set on fire many government buildings, including a local telephone exchange and LIC office. They also attacked many media vehicles and injured journalists, expressing their anger over the CBI court verdict.
Violence also spread to Delhi where a train was set on fire at Anand Vihar station. Malout and Balluanna railway stations in Punjab were partially torched by the angry followers as violence spread across Punjab in the aftermath of the court’s verdict. The railways cancelled over 250 trains in the violence prone sectors.
The predictable violence followed when a CBI court held Gurmeet Ram Rahim guilty of rape and criminal intimidation. “The Dera chief has been convicted, held guilty for rape. He was held guilty on charges of rape (Section 376 IPC) and criminal intimidation (Section 506 IPC),” CBI counsel HPS Verma told the media.
Soon after the verdict, Ram Rahim Singh was taken into custody by Haryana Police. He was later taken to Rohtak jail.
Dera Sacha Sauda sect members first targeted the media covering the verdict when they attacked journalists and overturned OB vans near the CBI court in Panchkula.
As the violence spread, the Dera said their guru has been wronged and that they will go in appeal. But the Dera must first answer the violence that was unleashed across three states.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh took stock of the situation in Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh in the wake of violence. He also called up chief ministers of Haryana and Punjab, Khattar and Amarinder Singh respectively, who briefed him about the current situation and the steps taken to restore normalcy. Singh also held a high-level meeting with top officials and reviewed the situation.
All this is not enough, India needs concrete action, not just words or chalta hai attitude. Show Khattar the door, disband the Dera sect.
