After a brief lull when new Covid cases were below the 1000 mark, Kerala witnessed a sharp rise in Coronavirus cases for a single day on Tuesday with 1167 people testing positive.

The worrisome factors are that 888 of the new cases were through contacts and the source of infection of 55 patients were not known.

The state also saw four Covid deaths on Tuesday.

Giving out these figures for the day, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan told the media that the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram continued to be a worry. On Tuesday, the city reported 227 new cases with 88 staff of Infrapark testing positive.

Test results show that 1 in 18 people in the city has Covid-19.

Another district reeling under Covid is Kottayam which reported 180 new cases followed by Malappuram (112), Thrissur (109), Kollam (95) and Ernakulam (70).

Minister for Tourism Kadakampally Surendan said that the lockdown in parts of Thiruvananthapuram will continue for some time. There has been pressure from the public to ease the lockdown measures and a decision is likely on this soom
