Bengaluru: Karnataka continued to report over 5000 new Covid-19 cases for the sixth day running, pushing up the case load to 1,07001. On Tuesday it was 5536, one of the highest in recent times.

The death toll due to Covid crossed the 2000 mark on Tuesday with 102 people succumbing to the virus.

The caseload has put Karnataka in a group of five states, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh which too crossed the 1-lakh milestone. However, Karnataka was the first state to cross the 1 lakh milestone in fewer days.

Half the number of cases and deaths are from Bengaluru alone. The capital reported 1898 new Covid cases and 40 deaths on Tuesday. Overall, the caseload of Bengaluru is 48,821 and deaths 957.

While Karnataka had a slow start when the pandemic first struck, the rise has been rapid in the past month after the lockdown was lifted. This sudden rise is also linked to increased testing.

As cases mounted, tracing the route map of the patients collapsed and the strategy moved towards more testing, effective treatment protocol and increasing the number of beds.
