As Rae Bareli goes to polls today, the talk is on Priyanka Vadra’s lack-lusture campaigning. Like her brother Rahul, she suddenly vanished from campaigning and this has led rival BJP to claim that the SP-Cong alliance didn’t want to expose the Gandhis out of the fear of impending poor results.
Despite the high stakes in Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka Vadra, who was the architect of the pre-poll alliance between Congress and SP in Uttar Pradesh, made just one campaign speech. After that she vanished.
Her one appearance is a far cry from the past when she was the Gandhi poll manager. Though Amethi votes on February 27, so far there is no sign she will campaign there.
Even her first and onl election rally speech so far was disappointing. Much like the speeches of Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, it was more rhetoric, less substance. And even some lies. Not only this, it didn’t appear that Priyanka was very much interested in participating or addressing the rally. Her speech lacked the passion of a seasoned politician as she barely spoke for a few minutes, as if obliging the party, says the Financial Express.
Two more things Priyanka conveyed with her speech were — a) She is not very much interested in politics. b) Even if she decides to join politics, she won’t be any better than her sibling and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
Crucially, her engagement on the Gandhi family turf has come down sharply since 2012, contrary to expectations it would shoot up this time and some initial proposals that she campaign widely in UP.
Priyanka’s virtual no-show has magnified the Gandhis’ absence here. It is also for the first time that Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has not made it to her parliamentary constituency for campaigning.
