In the brewing cold war between the US and China, the US Justice Department has accused a pair of Chinese hackers who tried to acquire vaccine research and other information about the coronavirus pandemic for Beijing’s intelligence services.

An indictment of the two says the pair were involved in cybertheft that also targeted defence contractors, high-end manufacturing and solar energy companies. Justice Department officials said that the hackers sometimes worked on behalf of China’s spy services and sometimes worked to enrich themselves.
The move comes as the Trump administration has been stepping up its criticism of China, accusing it of stealing secrets and of failing to contain the spread of Covid-19.
