Russia today claimed that Islamic State leader Al-Baghdadi may have been killed in an air strike. But then, he had been `killed’ many times before.

Russia’s defence ministry today said it is investigating whether one of its air strikes in Syria killed the leader of the Islamic State militant group (IS).

But there is a surprise. The strike is believed to have taken place on May 28. What took Russia this long to come out with the news?

The strike is believed to have killed 330 other fighters.

The air strike took place when the IS military council was holding a meeting at the group’s de-facto capital of Raqqa, in northern Syria.

Islamic State Leader Al-Baghdadi KilledA statement by Russia’s defence ministry said 30 IS commanders and up to 300 soldiers were at the Raqqa meeting.

“According to information that is checked through various channels, IS leader Ibrahim Abu-Bakr al-Baghdadi, who was killed as a result of the strike, was also present at the meeting,” it added.

The US could not confirm whether Baghdadi had been killed. There has been no official comment from Syria’s government.

Islamic State Leader Al-Baghdadi Killed-News Time NowBaghdadi’s whereabouts have been unknown for some time. He was believed to be in Mosul in Iraq before a US-led coalition began an effort to reclaim the city in October 2016. He was last seen in 2014.

This is not the first time that Baghdadi was killed. Earlier there were reports that he had been killed.
