Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel was extensively trolled for allegedly saying Snapchat was for rich people and not for poor countries like India and Spain. But, wait! Aren’t we Indians poor, sad and backward, both according to facts and in our minds?
Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel perhaps has been having the worst nightmare since the past two days because of what he ‘allegedly’ said two years ago.
Spiegel was extensively trolled for allegedly saying Snapchat was for rich people and not for poor countries like India and Spain. Minutes after the media reported a two-year-old story, activists on social media (read anyone who has a Twitter and Facebook account) expressed outrage over the CEO and the company so much so that #boycottSnapchat was trending on social media with radicals going on the app and rating it ‘one star’.
The following events took place after the reports of “poor India” were doing the rounds on social media.
a. #uninstallsnapchat was trending. Yeah! Because we are not poor and got really touchy about it.
b. #boycottsnapchat. Check out the one-star rating and the comments. Some users on Twitter even went on to state a reason to delete the app was because of “hateful and abusive” content.
c. Some uninstalled Snapdeal instead of Snapchat. Duh! While many stated that Snapchat has been mistaken with Snapdeal. The Internet nationalists would perhaps say it is because both the companies have “Snap” word in it.
d. Indian hackers allege that they have siphoned the details of about 1.7 million users.
And now, Indians went to an extent that they targeted Spiegel’s fiancé’ and trolled her extensively.
But Internet folks, here are some Snap Facts for you:
*Let us not forget: one in five Indians are poor, 80% of poor live in rural areas and 14 % poor people living in urban areas. It does not end there.
What happened to the aggression and outrage when India was ranked 122nd in the World Happiness Index behind our neighbours Nepal and China?
Why didn’t these Internet nationalists feel the same when the world pointed at us and said you are sad?!
It is high time we Indians turn all the aggression into positivity and change our mindset. Let us first learn and develop our country instead of the hullabaloo against foreigners.
