In a major setback for the Board of Control for Cricket in India, the Supreme Court today shunted out Anurag Thakur, the head of the  cricketing body and secretary Ajay Shirke.

Pronouncing its order over the Justice RM Lodha Committee’s directives for reforms, the court issued showcause notice to Thakur asking why charges of perjury should not be pressed against him for disobeying the court’s orders.

The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur, is likely to appoint former Union home secretary, GK Pillai as BCCI president.

It may be recalled that the Lodha committee had recommended the removal of the BCCI office-bearers and the appointment of Pillai in its status report.

In the last hearing, amicus curiae and senior lawyer Gopal Subramaniam recommended the names of Pillai with ex- Comptroller and Auditor General Vinod Rai and former Test cricketer Mohinder Amarnath to run the BCCI.

In his reaction, Justice Lodha said the committee’s recommendations can be used as a template for other sporting bodies.
