Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as 08th Executive President of Sri Lanka this morning before the Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya at the Parliament Complex building in Colombo.
He has now become the first Executive President in Sri Lanka who has been elected as the president whilst the Political party he represents has only a single seat in Parliament. President Ranil Wickremesinghe who held Prime Minister’s post six times previously was defeated at the Parliamentary Election held in 2020. His Party the United National Party (UNP) had only managed to secure a National List MP Post in that election and the new president had entered parliament through the National list slot received by his party.
Meanwhile the Protesters at Galle face in Colombo who had launched “Gota Go Home” campaign 104 days ago which make former President Gotabhaya Rajapakshe to flee from the country had vowed yesterday (20) they will continue their protest until President Wickremesinghe leaves his office. The protesters had stated at a media briefing held yesterday that the selecting of the new President through a Parliamentary vote doesn’t portraying the real public opinion which is different from that. Now the Galle face protesters had changed their campaign slogan as “Go Ranil Home” from “Gota Go Home”.
