Police officer stoned to death by mob outside Srinagar’s Jamia mosque even as special Shab-e-Qadr prayers were going on inside the mosque.

In a barbaric and anti-religious attack, senior police officer Mohammed Ayub Pandith was stripped naked and stoned to death on Friday morning by an irate mob just outside the Jamia mosque in Srinagar.

The Deputy Superintendent of Police was stoned to death even as special Shab-e-Qadr prayers were going on inside the mosque.

Sources said he was photographing people coming out of the mosque at 3 am as part of his duty to find out if there were terrorists in the crowd.

Police officer lynched by mob outside Srinagar's Jamia mosqueEven as he was taking pictures, a group of young men attacked him. In self defence, Pandith allegedly fired several shots from his pistol, injuring three people.

In no time young men began to beat the police officer. They stripped the officer naked and started stoning him. Minutes later he died due to stone pelting.

The irony is that the incident occurred even as devotees were immersed in the special Shab-e-Qadr prayers that focused on peace and well-being inside Jamia Masjid.

Soon after the incident, bloody clashes erupted between police and youth outside the Jamia mosque. Police reinforcements were rushed to the area even as authorities clamped restrictions on people’s movement in seven police station areas of Srinagar.
