Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised the decision, describing it as a step towards better governance and prosperity for Ladakh. In his own post on X, the Prime Minister noted that these new districts would receive more focused attention, thereby bringing essential services and opportunities closer to the people. He congratulated the residents of Ladakh on this development.
Ladakh, which was carved out as a separate Union Territory in 2019, previously had only two districts — Leh and Kargil. The addition of Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang as new districts is expected to play a crucial role in addressing the unique challenges faced by this geographically vast and sparsely populated region. The move also comes amid growing demands for the inclusion of Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to protect the tribal identity, culture, land, and resources of the local communities.
This decision by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is not only a response to the administrative needs of Ladakh but also a strategic move ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu & Kashmir. The creation of new districts is likely to enhance the delivery of government schemes and services, thus empowering the people of Ladakh and strengthening the region’s overall development trajectory.
