Rahul Gandhi has high stakes in this election. If he succeeds, he will cement his place in the Congress at the top

Rahul Gandhi has high stakes in this election. If he succeeds, he will cement his place in the Congress at the top and brush aside critics like Salman Khurshid and old-timers. If he fails, his writ in the Congress will get weakened and his role in cobbling together an anti-BJP coalition will fall flat.

Modi gameplan for the next year will be decided on May 15

May 15, when counting of votes begins across Karnataka, Modi gameplan for the next year will be decided. It is his first big battle below the Vindhyas, and in the non-Hindi heartland. If he succeeds, the 2019 Lok Sabha polls will almost be a cake walk. If not, he will face a tough time in the coming elections to the Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh assemblies and the Lok Sabha polls in 2019.

It is a battle for survival for JD(S)

It is a battle for survival for JD(S). If it does not do well, Kumaraswamy and his JD(S) will be pushed to the brink of political extinction. But if it succeeds, Kumaraswamy will be a kingmaker in Karnataka and his father HD Deve Gowda would emerge as a major player in the national political arena.
