CHENNAI: Actor-turned-politician Khushbu Sundar will join the BJP on Monday in New Delhi, sources at the Chennai saffron Party said Sunday night. However, Khushbu, a national spokesman for the Congress Party, could not be reached for comment. She had refused to answer journalists’ questions about this while at the airport earlier in the evening.
A source from the BJP party told that Khushbu will join the party in the presence of the party’s national chairman, JP Nadda. BJP sources also said that an IRS official from Tamil Nadu and a Youtuber is likely to join the party on Monday. The party’s state chairman L Murugan has been camping in New Delhi since Saturday.
For a month now, speculation abounds that Khushbu could join the BJP. Some of her tweets in recent months were seen as a sign to the saffron party that her attitude towards the party had changed. In particular, she departed from her party’s stance by welcoming the National Education Policy, and even tweeted an apology to party leader Rahul Gandhi for her differing views. But on October 6, participating in a congressional event, she flatly denied the rumors. Even a few days ago, she hit the BJP government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi hard on certain issues.
On Sunday night, before boarding a flight to Delhi, Khushbu refused to answer questions from reporters. When asked if she was going to join the BJP, she said: “No comment.” When asked if she was still a member of Congress, she declined to answer.
Khushbu joined Congress in 2014, having been a member of the DMK since 2010.
Born into a Muslim family in Mumbai, Khushbu was one of the most popular Tamil movie stars in the 1990s. At the peak of his career, fans even dedicated a temple to Her. She went on to act in television series and is also a popular television host.
