NDA nominee Ram Nath Kovind today filed his papers for the Presidential election scheduled for July 17 and will face off with the Congress-led opposition’s candidate Meira Kumar.
With confident strides, a broad smile and Prime Minister Narendra Modi by his side, NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind today filed his nomination papers for the upcoming poll to elect the 15th President of India.

In a show of strength, Modi accompanied Kovind to Parliament House where he filed his papers. In the big BJP procession were several senior BJP leaders, chief ministers of NDA-ruled states and senior leaders of other parties supporting his candidature.
Kovind, former governor of Bihar, is sure to win the elections with over 63% of electoral college votes already in his kitty. In the Presidential election scheduled for July 17, he will face off with the Congress-led opposition Dalit candidate Meira Kumar, whose nomination was announced Thursday. Counting of votes is expected to take place on July 20.
The Shiv Sena, the Janata Dal (U) and the AIADMK, including O. Panneerselvam, have all backed Kovind’s candidature, making a contest heavily one-sided.
“The opposition is bringing Meira Kumar’s name on the list because they feel left out. It’s predicted that more than 60 percent vote will fall for NDA’s chosen nominee Kovind. They have decided to fight it out through this poll. But we can’t help watching them lose,” BJP’s Prabhat Jha told ANI.
It will be an irony of sorts in Kerala where the ruling Left party and its bitter rival Congress would vote together for Meira Kumar. Similarly, Veerendra Kumar, JD(U) MP from Kerala, will also vote for the UPA candidate, breaking ranks with his party.
Later, speaking to mediapersons, Kovind said: I am thankful to all those who have supported me. I will try to maintain the dignity of the post. Ever since I took over as governor, I have no political affiliation. President of India is above politics.
