Indian cinema has another history in the making as Anjali Ameer, a transsexual, plays the lead role opposite Mammootty in a Tamil-Malayalam bilingual film.

Anjali - the First Transsexual HeroineFor the first time in the history of Indian Cinema, a transsexual Anjali Ameer, will be seen as a female lead in a bilingual film and opposite a superstar like Mammootty. The new chapter began when Mammootty announced the new costar for his upcoming film.

Mammootty is now acting in a Tamil, Malayalam bilingual which is directed by Ram. It was then Anjali was named as the female lead and she was suggested by Mammootty himself.

Directed by Ram the movie is set to be released later this year. The Tamil version is named as ‘Peranbu’ and the Malayalam version is yet to be named.

Model turned actress Anjali is very excited about working with one of India’s greatest actors in the very first film. She had undergone a sex surgery when she was 20.

Anjali - the First Transsexual HeroineRecalling her past she said “After completing my class 10th, I started trying to undergo this change. Initially, it wasn’t acceptable for my family. So, I ran away from home. I lived with transgender communities in Coimbatore and Bengaluru in the next couple of years. It was a period of real personal struggle,”

“Later, my family accepted me for who I am and wanted me to come back home. They have been supportive and they are my strength.” she added

I feel like acting is the best that I can do to bring out my personality,” she says while the majority of those going through a gender crisis end up on the fringes, and get into prostitution, dancing or begging to make a living.
