An Air India Express (1344) from Dubai split into two while trying to land in heavy rainfall in Karipur Airport in Kozhikode, killing the pilot and the co-pilot, 17 more people succumbed to injuries, according to reports. Many passengers were injured even as the toll is likely to go up.
According to initial reports, the flight had 190 people on board, including crew members.
The flight failed to touch down at the start of the runway and landed deep down resulting in the plane skidding and crashing into the wall of the table-top airport. The plane nose-dived 30 feet below, according to Asianet News.
As it crashed, the cockpit got completely crushed, resulting in the death of the pilot.
According to sources, flights are usually diverted to nearby airports if the weather is inclement at the Karipur airport since it’s a tabletop airport. However, it wasn’t done on Friday.
MLA TV Ibrahim told the media that all ambulances from Kozhikode and Malappuram have been redirected to the airport.
A similar such crash occurred in Mangaluru in Karnataka a few years ago.
