Zoom to expand India operations, to open Tech centre in Bengaluru

Popular video-audio platform Zoom Video Communications is all set to open a technology centre in Bengaluru. This is part of its expansion plans in India where Zoom is fast picking up users.

Though initially the Government of India had flagged security concerns on Zoom platform and also banned its usage in certain government offices, usage of Zoom’s platform has soared as millions of Indians are physically stranded due to Covid-19 and continue to work from home.

In fact, from January to April, Zoom has clocked a whopping 6,700% growth in free user sign-ups in India. Zoom, which competes with Microsoft’s Teams, Cisco’s Webex, Google’s Meet and JioMeet, was downloaded 303 million times between April and June globally, according to Sensor Tower.

The new set up in Bengaluru will support the engineering team based out of California. The company will immediately begin recruiting DevOps engineers, IT, security, and business operations specialists. The company did not, however, disclose the number of employees it wants to hire or the total investment in setting up the centre.

“India is a strategically important country for Zoom and we expect to see continued growth and investment here. We are proud to provide our services for free to over 2,300 educational institutions in India during the Covid-19 pandemic and look forward to continuing to work with the people and the Indian government,” CEO Eric Yuan was quoted in ToI.

Besides Bengaluru, the company has an office in Mumbai, as also two data centres, in Mumbai and Hyderabad.
