UAE to set up world’s largest electronic waste recycling plant

UAE is taking an important step in tackling the menace of electronic waste by setting up the largest electronic waste recycling plant in the gulf region.

228,000 sq.ft electronic and specialized waste recycling plant will be built at the Dubai Industrial Park, the dedicated industrial hub within Dubai Wholesale city.

Enviroserve UAE, the prominent distributors of waste and environmental solutions will be constructing the plant and an agreement was signed with Dubai Wholesale city.

The Dh 120 million project will be supported by the Swiss Government Export Finance Agency and it will be one of the largest foreign direct investments in the field of environmental management in the country. The centre will also serve as the largest centre of expertise for electronic waste management in the Middle East.

The Phase one of the project is expected to commence operations by the end of this year and it will be capable of processing 39,000 tons of electronic waste annually.  The plant will recycle the entire range of electrical and electronic equipments ranging from consumer, industrial, commercial and military appliances. Air Conditioners, batteries, IT equipments, household appliances, mobile phones, military avionics and specialized waste material such as aerosol cans and light bulbs will be recycled. And it will also become the only dedicated refrigerant reclaim facility in the UAE.

The decision to build an electronic waste recycling plant in Dubai Wholesale city comes at a time when a recent research revealed that the average UAE resident produces 17.2 kilograms of e-waste every year. The total annual e-waste of the GCC in 2015 is 600000 tons and is expected to reach 900000 tons by 2020.
