Sena Brigade Cane Couples in Kochi, Police Watch

In a case of moral policing Shiv Sena activists caned couples in Kochi’s iconic Marine Drive even as policemen watched on.

Sena Brigade Cane Couples in Kochi, Police WatchIn yet another shameful incident of moral policing, a group of Shiv Sena activists yesterday mercilessly canned, threatened and manhandled couples who were sitting at the famous and scenic Marine Drive in Kochi.

The harassment took place in the presence of policemen and mediapersons. A police sub inspector was suspended and eight constables were transferred for their failure to prevent the harassment. Six Sena activists were arrested in connection with the incident.

On Wednesday evening a group of Shiv Sena supporters wielding canes held a march across Marine Drive. In a video that went viral, activists were seen threatening and chasing away couples who were sitting.  The group was marching with banners that said ‘Stop crime against girls’.

One of the banner read, “love under umbrellas must be stopped.”  The activists also hurled abuses at the couples to the shock of the citizens who were mortified by the sight. They verbally abused the couples and ordered them to vacate the walkway. Sources said that the group had not taken permission to hold the protest at Marine Drive.  So, what was the police doing? They should not just be suspended, but booked for abetment of crime.

A few days back, Sena activists had “warned’’ couples against sitting at the walkway. This comes two weeks after a youth committed suicide after he and his friend were harassed at Azheekkal beach in Kollam on Valentine’s Day. Visuals of the couple being harassed had gone viral.
