Baahubali Clones Would Not Survive

Inspired by the success wave of Baahubali, more mythological themed movies are being planned in India. But it is likely that these clones would not survive at the box office.

Baahubali Clones Would Not SurviveAfter the runway hit of S S Rajamouli’s Baahubali that overwhelmed global audience, other film industries in India have now set out to imitate the formula, mainly banking on mythological theme.

Following the steps of Baahubali, Sandalwood film producer N Muniratna recently announced that he would produce a film on Kurukshetra, which is set to release next year.

This is not the first mythological-themed movie announced after the pounding success of Baahubali. Mollywood industry’s director V A Shrikumar Menon announced a whopping Rs 1000 crore-budget film on Bheem of Mahabaratha fame. The movie is an adaptation of famous Malayalam writer MT Vasudevan Nair’s Randamoozham. The film stars Mohan Lal as Bheem.

Not just the Kannada and Malayalam film industries, reports are doing the rounds that three film producers – Allu Aravind, Madhu Mantena and Namit Malhotra– are coming together to adapt Ramayana for the big screen with Rs 500 crore budget.

All these mythological-theme based films have one thing in common with Baahubali – the use of computer aided visual effects.

VFX work would cost filmmakers a staggering amount. And now that Baahubali has set the way, would its clones live up to the success of Baahubali?  Most likely not.

Baahubali Clones Would Not SurviveVFX cinema has been a long-standing hit in Hollywood, however, it has become a trend in Indian cinema just recently. Although there have been some high-budget VFX Indian films like Dhoom 3, Krish, Robot and even Shah Rukh Khan’s Ra One, none of them equalled the noise of Baahubali.

Even the multi-starrer epic-based story -Bajirao Mastani- starring Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, and Priyanka Chopra failed to appeal to the audience.

It’s not only about an appealing story but also a Hollywood-bar VFX with a blend of a powerful star cast that makes a film stand out.  It is no surprise Baahubali is dubbed as a film like Star Wars or the epic-series Game of Thrones.

The mythological theme- majorly Mahabharata and Ramayana– are likely to struggle at box office unless the filmmakers have something new to offer.

Baahubali is in the cast of Sholay. Just the way the latter’s clones had failed to impress movie-lovers, Baahubali too lives in the hearts of movie-lovers and is irreplaceable.

Moreover, an overdose of VMF would soon bring in a fatigue in the audience. This happened years back with a Malayalam movie called My Dear Kuttychathen. This was India’s first 3D film. After the runaway success of My Dear Kuttychathen, there was a rush for making 3D movies. Some succeeded, but most of them failed.

Clones hardly survive. Movie makers need to be creative, not copycats.
