Mukesh Ambani Launches `Free’ 4G Smart JioPhone

Mukesh Ambani today launched JioPhone which is likely to deeply impact the smartphone market and services of key players.

Marking another telecom revolution, Mukesh Ambani today unveiled the JioPhone which would be virtually free. Voice, data and SMS would also come free.

The monthly plan of Rs 153 would include cost of the phone. “At a plan Rs 153 a month, it is only 3 per cent of the existing price putting an end to unaffordable data for all Indians forever,” Ambani said.

The company will also offer similar features for a weekly plan for Rs 54, and a two-day plan of Rs 24. free.  

The announcement was made at the Reliance Industries Annual General Meeting (AGM) in Mumbai. The JioPhone is a 4G VoLTE enabled feature phone.

He claimed that JioPhone’s effective price is Rs 0. But there is a catch. You have to pay a security deposit of Rs 1500 upfront, but the amount will be refunded after 3 years. This is to ensure security, Ambani said.

Despite this catch, the phone will be the cheapest in the market.

“On the Jio Phone voice will always be free, second, the 50 crore feature phone users don’t even have access to basic internet. I believe today every young Indian should have access to information at his fingertips and that is what the Jio Phone enables. To enable a digital life all need access to data at affordable rates. So starting August 15 this year I am declaring digital freedom for all feature phone users. Jio will give them access to unlimited data on the Jio phone,” an emotional Ambani said to a thundering applause from shareholders present at the event.

The company has a target of making 5 million Jio Phones available every week.

Users will be able to connect JioPhone to any TV, not just smart TVs but even the old CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) TVs. that you have. All Jio Phone users can enjoy viewing their Jio content on their phones from their TV screens, Ambani said.

Users will need to buy the Jio Dhan Dhana Dhan package of Rs 309 to get the extra data needed for this.

“Today Jio is going to reinvent the conventional feature phone,” he announced. The company claims that the Jio Phone is the “most intelligent affordable phone in the whole world.”

Ambani called the new JioPhone ‘India ka smartphone.’ It comes loaded with features like expandable SD card slot, 4-way navigation, and more.

The JioPhone will have Alphanumeric keypad and features a headphone jack, microphone, speaker, and supports FM Radio as well.

The 4G VoLTE-enabled JioPhone supports all languages. Hence, users can speak to the device via voice commands for functions to work.

Users will have an option to browse Internet on the new JioPhone as well, and it comes pre-loaded with Jio apps.

Anticipating a rush, Ambani said the phone will be sold as first come-first serve basis from September 2017. The target is to make 5 million phones available every week.

Here are some details of the JioPhone:

The phone is a feature phone and will sport a larger screen. It will have access to apps and 4G data and 4G VoLTE calls and will effectively cost the customer.

JioPhone users will have to pay just Rs 153 a month, including the cost of the phone. There will be a weekly plan of Rs 54 and a two-day plan of Rs 24 with all the same features.

It has a voice command interface and comes with a 2.4-inch display. It can play the JioCinema app and users can watch movies on this feature/smartphone smash.

It has an SOS feature as well, which can be activated by pressing 5. There is support for NFC that enables quick payments, and the ability to cast content.

The phone will be available for beta testing from August 15 and for prebooking from August 24.

The JioPhone will always have free voice calls. From August 15, the JioPhone will come with free unlimited data.

The phone has been created by Indian engineers for an Indian audience.

Jio will be the greatest accelerator of the Bharat-India connectivity, said Mukesh Ambani.
